Why We Started Kind Hemp Co.

We officially launched our first hemp sock line on January 22nd, 2018. These last three years have been an incredible journey and we wouldn’t be where we are today without all of our loyal supporters.

Living in the mountains of Southwest Colorado has given us a strong love for the beautiful environment that surrounds us. Our love for nature and the power of hemp is what inspired us to stop working our day jobs and start chasing our dreams. Simply put, we believe hemp can change the world.

Flashback to 2017 and we were both working in Durango, Colorado. We were grateful to be living in such a beautiful place but we weren’t passionate about what we were doing. Derek, recently graduated with his marketing degree and was working at a local ski resort. Savannah was waitressing at a fine dining restaurant. On the side however, we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do with our lives. We knew we wanted to work with nature, help others, and do something that would positively impact the planet.

This was on the cusp of the 2018 Hemp Farming Bill which legalized hemp across the country so hemp was the “talk of the town” so to say. We wanted to learn more about hemp so we began doing some research. What we learned astonished us.

Hemp has been around for 10,000 years and has over 50,000 different uses but why isn’t it being put to use?

In 1937 hemp was banned in the United States under the Marihuana Tax Act. The corporate involvement and greed behind hemps demise was extremely frustrating to us. We have this incredibly versatile plant that can be sustainably grown almost anywhere and can easily replace many harmful products but we are wasting this resource completely! Hemp paper can save forests, hemp plastic is biodegradable and free of toxins, hemp clothing can replace polyester (which leads to micro-plastic pollution) and can replace pesticide grown, environmentally harsh, cotton. This is what caught our interest the most— Hemp Clothing.

Hemp clothing has been around for thousands of years and use to make people think of rough burlap-like fabrics. Now however, hemp can be made into any type of clothing and it is incredibly soft. Not only is it soft, its durable, breathable, odor-resistant, anti-microbial, and it wicks moisture. There isn’t any other clothing that can compete with hemp.

Hemp is a superior fabric AND it positively impacts the environment when its grown. The hemp plant can be grown without any pesticides, requires little water, it actually cleans the soil it is grown in (a process called phytoremediation), and it absorbs more carbon per acre than any other forest or commercial crop.

We started Kind Hemp Co. because hemp inspired us. We love hemp and all of the good it can do for the people and the planet. We have a passion for educating others about hemp and eliminating the negative stigma associated with it. We believe in what we do and what hemp can do. Educating about hemp, getting hemp clothing on as many folks as we can in the world, and growing hemp on our own farm is what we were meant to do.

We are incredibly grateful that we were both able to transition to Kind Hemp Co. full time in this last year. It is a dream come true that we get to focus all of our time and energy into running Kind Hemp Co. and growing hemp on our farm, Kind Hemp Farms.

This is only the beginning of hemp’s resurgence in America and we are very excited to not only see the what the future has in store for it, but also to be a part of it every step of the way. The community of people that are ready to bring hemp back are full of passion just like us and it is a thrill to work alongside others who love hemp as much as we do.

We want to say to a huge thank you to all of our supporters, family, and friends. You are the amazing force behind the hemp movement.

Sincerely,
